Business was, as it had been in days long before he'd met a young boy with actual psychic powers at the tips of his fingers, bad. There was no other real word for it. Clients just didn't come in like they used to, fewer seemed to fall for his oh so witty word vomit, and more of the cases they brought to his desk were real, genuine hauntings that he could do nothing about than there had ever seemed to be. Worst of all, now that he was in a place surrounded by creatures and monsters that simply could not have existed in the Spice City he was used to, it dragged up the questions of: first, where a “specter” ended and where a “creature” began; and second, how many of these beasts that tiptoed this line he was actually capable of taking care of himself. Out of dumb luck and nothing else, perhaps, he'd managed to actually purify a malevolent ghost through the use of nothing but a salt-covered punch (it had never worked back home, but apparently it worked like a dream in some universe out there), but he'd also managed to try to “exorcise” a very sentient, very irritable civilian that didn't appreciate getting covered in poorly made charms designed to banish demons. Overall, he was having a jerk of a time making a living. The more potential cases he got, though, the more likely one of them was one he'd actually be able to carry out. Rather than lounge around in his office looking up videos of dogs, he supposed it was time to try a new tactic altogether.[break][break]
He'd scoffed at that one “psychic” who had taken his work out to the street – what was his name again? it'd been so long, he just couldn't recall... if he ever had – once upon a time, but loathe as he was to say it, it seemed like his only option now. If he took his business to the clients rather than waiting for them to see his beautifully edited posters hung up around town or the massive “Spirits and Such Consultation (Second Branch)” sign hanging outside his door, he might stand a chance of getting a descent stream of work coming through his door. Or, well, maybe not his door if he wasn't working from outside? Oh, well, it hardly mattered. Reigen stood outside now, sweating beneath his collar from a mixture of nerves and the heat (someday he'd learn to ditch the suit in favor of avoiding a heatstroke, but today was most certainly not that day), pretending to be casual with a printed copy of the daily Fidelux in one hand and an empty coffee cup he was still bringing to his lips in the other. His eyes, however, were on neither the newspaper nor the dried coffee stain around the lip of his long since useless cup. No, rather, they scanned the area looking for anyone and everyone who looked like a potential client. Despite his ability to read people fairly well, though, telling if a person suffered from a ghostly infestation from a glance alone was easier said than done. Maybe another change in tactic was required; he could probably convince someone looking relatively worse for wear that their problems found their roots in a haunting unknown to even them. If that was the case, then the crowd before him was ripe for the picking.[break][break]
“Excuse me, good sir!” the con artist called out, flashing an arm out to grab for the shoulder of a dark-haired man who looked more than a touch irritated by... well, something. It was a familiar sign of those with “ghastly ailments”. If he played his cards right, he might have bagged one first try. “You look as though you're troubled by something! If you'd spare a bit of your time, I'll make it worth your while.”
