Both. [break][break]
The Pharaoh guy wanted both. [break][break]
It made sense, logically, Parker supposed; if he had the money, he could keep the repaired cheeto receptacle as a backup, and get another computer for main use, or anything else you could think of. It just meant more work on the tech's part, because now he had to take the time to fix the junker and show the man new computers. That was what he got for being one of the most amicable tech support people on the island, but it didn't always mean he was happy keeping up this appearance. In manner, Parker was good at being nice, he liked being nice - but sometimes it got tiring, or would come back to bite him in the ass. [break][break]
So he continued tinkering away after given the go-ahead to continue, barely speaking more than a grumble or sigh as he ripped open and repaired the computer. The things he pulled out were remarkable: a lot of cat hair, some more cheeto dust, and what appeared to be a tooth. (Parker considered taking the tooth in to the island authorities for genetic testing, to make sure it was all okay, but then realized the effort and work on his part and resolved to let the Pharaoh deal with it.) "I don't mean to pry, but where in the world did you find such a crappy computer? It doesn't even appear that this laptop would pass a health and safety inspection," he said, furrowing his brows as his screwdriver popped open more of the computer. [break][break]
An oddity came in the form of a request to watch him work and ask questions. Parker was sure the other man (child?) meant well, but he wasn't the best at articulating ideas and concepts to others. His freshman papers had been a mess to anyone who tried to read them, himself included, and how would he be sure that his answers were understandable to his client? Still, he plowed on, hoping that perhaps this would convince the man to only choose repair or replace. "I can answer your questions, if you have them, I guess." Parker watched the other guy sip his tea, before sinking his head back into the gaping, sucking hole of death that was the computer and continuing his work.

O-Oh. She was okay. That was a relief - then why was she holding his face in her hands? They were calm, warm, and comforting, to be sure, and it had been a while since anyone had held him like that. The last person do that was probably either his mother or his sister, and now a teenage girl was doing it. Still, she seemed into be into it, and it was completely... platonic, at any rate. [break][break]
But as soon as her hands were touching his face, they were gone, and Parker couldn't help but feel a little less confused after the fact. The advice dispensed to him not to move too quickly seemed warranted, though, as he raised up his arm to try and stretch it and winced. It hurt, definitely, but it was nothing that wouldn't go away with a bit of time. Then the girl introduced herself and... Kaname Madoka? Where was that name from? Parker wracked his brains, trying to figure what country it was from and the naming conventions that followed it. Her name sounded Japanese, and if he was remembering right, then he should be referring to her by her last name, but he still couldn't tell how she had ordered it. Had she gone western, like he had, or kept it in its original format, Parker wondered. [break][break]
Erring on the side of caution (he didn't want to be disrespectful to a girl who had touched his face), he decided to use a Ms. and hope for the best. "Oh, uh, nice to meet you too, Ms. Kaname," he said, nodding awkwardly. Parker sat in silence for a moment, before realizing he had forgotten his manners again. "I'm, uh, Parker, uh, Park," he added, fiddling with his hands in his lap. "Nice to meet you too." [break][break]
Well, he was a decent person, if his parents had raised him right, and the man decided to break the ice in the only way he knew how: "So, lovely weather today, huh?"

Tomorrow, tomorrow... What was Parker doing tomorrow? He wracked his brain to try to remember his schedule, but all he could think of was an appointment around five in the afternoon, which would give him plenty of time to sleep late, get some coffee, and fix Marco's laptop. It'd also be an excuse to leave the apartment, and god knew how much he needed a reason to leave. The beach didn't work every day; what did he want to do, tan? [break][break]
Parker resolved to do it tomorrow, and broke out into an amiable grin. "Awesome. I'll see you down at the Coffee Shop tomorrow - do you have any time that works best for me to come down? I'm free until five, and it shouldn't take more than an hour or two to fix your laptop - and that's if it's completely screwed up," he said, trying to remember what drinks he could get there. They had those nice cold coffee-slushie things, right? He loved those, and he could sip on it whilst he worked, or chug it down in one go and work through brain freeze and a broken computer at the same time. [break][break]
"Well, in any case, I'll see you tomorrow at some point." Parker could tell - finally - that he was taking up a lot of Marco's time. How many people stood in the shallows to hold a conversation, anways?

As Parker savored the taste of the beef and stirred the noodles, he heard the creak of a door and the unmistakeable footsteps of the other occupant of the apartment as she stepped out of her room. Granted, he didn't heed her much mind for a bit - the beef had taken care of that - and had almost forgotten her position as he hummed along and continued making their dinner. After recognizing the sound of her voice, and the fact that it would be wise of him to reply to her, he spoke up, prepared to wax poetic about the beef. "Penny, you remember that mystery parcel in the meat drawer? The one none of us wanted to touch or open?" The man said, opening the fridge and pulling out some chives to cut up and slide into the noodles. [break][break]
Chop, chop, chop went the knife against the cutting board, and Parker's mouth opened wide to continue. "Well, I figured we had to eat something in the noodles, since you didn't get any eggs-" He paused, and spun around to look at her. "You got eggs, right? They're on their way or something? I can eat real breakfast tomorrow?" Parker said, brandishing his knife in a fashion that would be terrifying for someone who didn't know him, pointing it straight at Penny, rather accusatorially. Trying his best to raise his eyebrows (but probably failing quite a bit) he gave the knife a few shakes before turning back to the chives and his previous train of thought. "Since you didn't get any eggs, I figured it was time someone opened up the parcel. You know, before it went bad or anything and stunk up the whole fridge and we'd have to call someone to take it out and disinfect everywhere." [break][break]
He went back to the fridge, grabbing some carrots and a couple cloves of garlic, slamming the fridge door shut and dumping them unceremoniously on the cutting board as some of Penny's earlier words sunk in. Why would she- "Hey, what do you mean I almost look like I know what I'm doing. I cook my own meals all the time, I was a college student, I can cook better than you, miss shut-in. Do you even-" Parker was cut off from his ranting by the sound of the pot with the noodles rattling, and he rushed over to the stove to turn off the burner. He grabbed some potholders and quickly threw them around the handles as he ran to the sink to drain the water out. The boiling water sizzled a bit as they hit the sink, and Parker left them in the pot as he poured the broth back in with it to heat them up. [break][break]
Crisis averted, he turned back to the cutting board, and Penny. "Anyways, the food should be ready in a few minutes. I just need to finish chopping up all of this here, and mix it in with the noodles and the broth, then slice up the meat and add it, alright?" Giving her the stink eye, he dragged the meat over and sliced off another little piece for himself, savoring the taste of the magical beef. It didn't matter how much it cost; Parker would have to get this again, if they even sold it on the island. Penny could probably find it online, anyways, if they had to. He was prepared to sell his soul for this, and by the gentle moans coming from him, his body agreed. [break][break]
"Okay, can you make yourself useful and set the table? We're eating properly tonight - properly, I tell you, properly - so we're going to need chopsticks. Oh, but leave the noodle bowls over here, I'm going to have to serve this and I'm not walking everything over tot the table," He said, slicing the carrots into thin ribbons and checking the heat of the broth. It was nearly ready; another minute more, and they would eat like kings and queens.

In all honesty, Parker was unsure why he had come to the park that day. [break][break]
In English, his name seemed to be a pun of sorts, one that took him some time to get, and whenever he would arrive in such a place befitting his first (or last) name, especially within a group, people would seem to enjoy cracking jokes on the subject. As a result, he tended to stay away from areas designated as parks, occasionally making a point of it, but today... The weather was so nice, and he had been on his way back from a house call. It just seemed so unnecessary to purposefully avoid it in such nice weather, and Parker found himself strolling down the pathways of the city park, wandering aimlessly as he took in the day. [break][break]
He hadn't been paying particularly much attention to where he was walking, however, and nearly tripped over people a few times, walking away with a quick bow and a sorry before continuing on his way. Still, it didn't bother him; the day was spectacular, the scenery divine, and as he made his way towards a tree to sit down a girl cried "W-Watch out!" Parker recognized a moment too late that she meant the rock in his path, and he tripped on it anyways, landing with a thump on his belly, mere inches away from her. When he looked up, he saw a sight that came close to inappropriate, and he rolled over and sat up with a jolt. [break][break]
Rubbing some of the dirt off his forehead, Parker turned to face the girl, probably blushing something fierce. "I-I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to fall... there," he stammered, face contorting into a look of dismay. As per usual, though, he was forgetting his manners, and he scratched his head a bit before proceeding. [break][break]
"Are you alright, miss? I didn't hurt you... or anything... Right?"

Ah, wonderful. Parker could fix Marco's computer and then run off into the sunset with his coffee. Perfect. The only question was the when and where; if he wanted to do it now, which Parker was completely okay with, he would have to stop at the apartment first and grab his toolkit. It wasn't a problem, per se (he wanted that coffee, the sooner the better) but that would involve dragging someone into the realm of all that was evil, and Parker would wish that upon no person. Resolving himself to ask like a decent person, he calmed a bit and pushed his shoulders back, chest forward, to ask. [break][break]
"Alright, Marco, if we're doing this - would you like to do it now or later? I'm more than fine doing it now, but we would have to make a pitstop at my apartment to grab my toolkit. You might have an encounter with my roommates, and they're, well..." He swallowed mournfully before continuing. "A handful." Parker was always one to warn people before introducing them into a situation he felt was dangerous - in particular, that of his rooming situation. [break][break]
He bent down to splash some water on his legs and get some of the sand off his knees. Watching the water trickle down his legs, the man stood back up fully and let out a sigh.

This was supposed to be just another regular house call to fix someone's computer. Parker had gotten a message on Spectrum from someone claiming to be a Pharaoh asking him to fix his computer, and he was much intrigued. Weren't Pharaohs some old Egyptian thing you covered briefly in school? Still, his interest was piqued, and he could probably ask some questions about ancient Egypt if the guy turned out to be a legit super old dude. [break][break]
Well, he hadn't seemed... Super old. As far as he could tell, Parker thought the guy looked like one of the people from the nineties, the emu-whatchamacallits who dyed their hair insane colors and wore eyeliner and enjoyed being rude and distant to everyone. This seemed about right - the eyeliner was intense, and if he wasn't mistaken, that was a copious amount of hair gel being used to get that hair to stand up like that. Geez. How did someone even have the time in the morning to do that? [break][break]
This was how Parker found himself sitting at the Pharaoh's table, with almost all of his tools pulled out and a half-disassembled laptop in front of him. The thing was totally fucked up, that was for sure. It looked to be about eight years old, complete with cheeto dust covering the motherboard and a suspicious wrapper wedged near the battery. "Sorry to say this, sir, but your computer appears to have been a plate before it became your device. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend you buy a brand new computer; I can show some good ones, if you'd like." It sounded like such a dick move that repair did to make some cash, but this computer was truly and utterly full of crap. [break][break]
He cleared his throat. "Now, I can continue working on it, if that's what you want. I'll have to go through it and make sure that there's no malware or anything on it, and it should be good for another year if you take care of it properly," Parker added, stopping his work for a minute to look up at the man.

He listened as the man asked if Penny was a doctor. It would be incredibly nice - maybe she would work regular hours and get paid more and actually leave the house - but the though of her running around like a headless chicken trying to fix people seemed a bit much. "No, no, thank god she's not. She's just a shut-in obsessed with the internet. According to her, you can get everything through deliveries and never have to leave the apartment," Parker said, shaking his head a bit. If he tried internet cures, he'd be drinking apple cider vinegar every day and letting pigs eat the skin off his feet, something ridiculous like that. Universal health care was a lot easier, at least, and safer. [break][break]
His eyes went wide, though, when the man mentioned free coffee, and possibly messaging him about fixing his computer. Coffee was a gift from the gods, and he could truly never get enough of it. The day wasn't complete without a few cups of coffee, but it was always expensive to buy it at the coffee shop. "Marco-" that was his name, he'd just introduced himself, right. "I'd fix your computer for coffee, I love the stuff," he blurted, nodding his head wildly. He could fix this guy's computer, then get a cup of good, real coffee before going to deal with whatever shit was going on back at the apartment. Parker could almost taste it, then and there. [break][break]
Bar... ee-stuh? Right, that was what the people behind the counter at coffee places were called. They were the ones who always messed up spelling his name when friends would drag him to that place with the green lady, but Parker was a lot easier to write on cups, he figured. As he dwelled on this, he realized he had forgotten his manners. "Oh, right! Nice to meet you, Marco."

hi hello i am too lazy to grab a template (it's not a post, i don't give a fuuuuck) but i am so here for this. parker would probably treat him as he would treat a difficult client, and be really, really interested in how atem managed to get himself such a shitty computer. but he'd also probably just look at atem and be like "did this guy ever leave his emo phase??? geez" and be confused the whole time. anyways it's atem's call on whether that ends in disaster or friendship or compensation or what, don't make me make decisions.

The other man didn't feel too terribly. That was good. Parker wasn't sure what was ideal behavior, but he had always figured that if he had made someone feel bad, that was a problem. Maybe it was just his job fixing things, but he always tried to leave others happy. So it relieved him to see that he hadn't caused that much distress. Grins were always a good sign, and Parker nodded back gently as the man talked, ready to continue on the day in a good mood. [break][break]
When his name was asked for, though, he froze and blinked, ready to list off his name, date of birth, his high school, his college, his major - until he remembered that that probably wasn't the best idea. Instead, Parker took a moment to compose himself before responding. "Park, Parker Park, long suffering tech support," he said, before extending out a hand. If he was introducing himself, he had always bowed or shaken hands, but bowing wasn't the best option here, lest he come face-to-face with the ocean. [break][break]
"I should be fine, though, I don't believe you would be responsible for my well-being in any way. If it comes to it, I'm sure my roommate will order me some fancy medical treatment off the internet or something," Parker added, trying to put on what looked like an amicable smile. On him, though, any type of smile tended to look like he was either trying to scare children or was extremely constipated. [break][break]
(What was to say he wasn't, though?)

Coming from living in the city, the beach was something uncommon to Parker. It was something to be visited on vacation, a long train ride or a flight away. As such, it was one of his favorite things on the island, one of the few things he found good about the place, compared to Earth. He could visit it whenever he wanted, just take a quick drive - or hell, walk down, without paying a cent. So he'd slipped on some trunks, slung a towel around his shoulders and applied sunscreen liberally, ready for an afternoon at the beach. [break][break]
An hour later, when there was a large sandcastle in front of Parker and sand covering his body, he figured it was time to rinse off in the water and go swimming, or at least take a quick dunk before heading out. He dove into the water, and basked in the cool feeling of the water before coming up for air. The young man just lay on top of the water, staring up at the sky and listening to the sounds of people and families enjoying the day. All good things have to come to an end, though, and Parker ended up swimming in, until the water was too shallow and he had to stand up. [break][break]
As soon as that happened, though, he heard a distinct thump and registered the feeling of pain a couple seconds later. Parker realized, all too quickly, that someone had hit him with a surfboard. Unintentionally, he was sure, but there would probably be a mark on his shoulder if he looked later. He turned, and saw the man - probably the guy who hit him, he was the only one nearby with a board - open his mouth to speak, and ask if he was hurt. "I'm fine, I think. There might be a mark when I check later, but that should probably go away pretty quick. I think I'll be okay, so to speak. Don't worry about it," he replied, moving his shoulder a little bit. It stung a little bit, but Parker was pretty sure he was able to mask his grimace.

Parker drove up into the underground garage at 5:59pm sharp, ready to rush upstairs and eat something. It had been a long, disgusting day; some kid had spilled orange juice in his family's computer or something, and it had congealed into something nasty. Whatever it was, cleaning it out and then getting the computer working again had been a long and disgusting affair, and all he wanted right now was a shower and some hot food. Of course, as soon as he made it up to the apartment, and had shed his shoes and bag, there was a more gruesome sight in the fridge. [break][break]
They were completely out of eggs. Had Percy forgotten to get more, or had Penny not ordered delivery service? Either way, he was sorely disappointed, and he would have to change the dinner plans. Instead of eggs in their noodles, they would have to have some other form of protein. Digging through the mess that was the communal fridge, Parker spied the mysterious package that had just appeared in the meat drawer a few days ago, and no one was willing to open. He took the plunge, grabbing a pair of scissors and slicing open the package to find perfect, glistening, majestic wagyu beef. Parker hadn't seen the stuff in years; his family had had some on a trip to Japan when he was in middle school, and it was so wonderful he thought he would die and go to heaven. This had to be a joke. He couldn't do the stuff justice, but Percy was at work, and...[break][break]
Fuck it, he was going to cook it himself. He was a fair cook. It wasn't that hard, right? Parker pulled out a pan, sliced off some of the fat to grease the pan with, and... It smelled so good. So good. "Penny, get out here, I've got some amazing beef," Parker yelled at Penny's door. He plopped the steak into the pan, and listened to it sizzle. This wasn't something he had experience cooking, though, so he dug through the kitchen for a meat thermometer until he came upon it, hidden in the back of a drawer with utensils. Remembering the noodles, he pulled out another pot and started those, and then dug out some broth. This meal would take the cake for the fanciest thing he'd ever made, surely. Percy would be so proud. [break][break]
But just like that, the meat was done, and Parker stabbed it multiple times with the thermometer to make sure it was okay. Once his fears were eased, he slid it onto the cutting board, and sliced off a tiny bit to try. "Holy shit, this is amazing!" he shouted, and really hoped the neighbors didn't hear. If someone came to investigate, Parker really didn't want to share.

Parker was pulled from Earth the day he was due to start mandatory military service. Perhaps it was his repeated groans of "Fuck, I don't want to be here" or the college degree waiting for him in the United States, but some celestial force took pity on him and brought him to the island at the tender age of twenty. The only things he brought with him were the clothes on his back, and the phone in his pocket.
[attr="class","rcappleft2"] [attr="class","rcappleft3"] [attr="class","rcappleft4"] [attr="class","rcapplefttitle"]CHARACTER ABILITIES [attr="class","rcappleft51"]
INTENSE TECHNOLOGICAL SKILLS While quite human, while on Earth, Parker partook in many activities that saw him get incredibly skilled with all manners of technology. He was halfway through a computer science degree when he was plucked from Seoul, which, in addition to going to a science high school, means that's he's really great at working with them. While the words "computer science degree" don't mean much without an actual diploma to show for it (and few islanders having any knowledge of American institutions), he had the class record for building the fastest computer the fastest. Parker is someone you want fixing your computer. Or game system. Or anything, really. If you've got it, there's a really good chance he can fix it.

Each sibling before you shows promise. Your eldest brother begins business school before you're born, and you never really spend much time with him. When he comes home to visit, your family compares you to how Kyung-ho was as a boy. He was quiet, precocious, and behaved well, traits you seem to follow him in. You're reading by the age of three, doing middle-school level math by six. Endlessly, they expect great things of you, in the vein of your brother, but he simply ruffles your hair and tells you to keep up the good work.[break][break]
Unlike Kyung-ho, Seo-yeon, your older sister, is vivacious and holds your hand every step of the way. Barely in college, she holds your hand as you leave kindergarten and go to elementary school, and is the one who takes you on playdates or other social events. She's the one who helps you with your homework, consoles you when another boy in your class picks a fight with you, and explains what it meant when a girl kissed you on the cheek. Seo-yeon becomes a third parent, and when she graduates college and moves to Gwangju to work, it's hard. Anything that was once interesting to you seems to lose its meaning, and you lack vigor for your schoolwork. ("It's too early for him to become depressed," the therapist tells your mother. "He's probably just bored in school. Try introducing him to higher level concepts at home.")[break][break]
So your parents enlist Seung-gi, your older brother, to expose you to higher level schooling. Seven years older than you, he was always in the awkward position of being between you and the elder two, and has always been a bit of an enigma to you. Between the time he spends at school or in the hagwon, you're not sure where he finds the time to teach you everything he's learning, but the new connection you form with him makes him your favorite sibling. You assist with his homework, or grab him snacks, and in return he's honest with you. He tells you everything you haven't heard about the world, of corruption and of gray areas. A firecracker, he's passionate about his issues and soon you share his intensity. You work harder than ever, and your parents are pleased. They expect a lot of the both of you, and you know that you'll live up to that.[break][break]
But when he doesn't get into a top three school, like your older siblings, your parents don't take it well. Seung-gi moves out, and you lock yourself into your room when you're not at school. The most common word in your vocabulary becomes fuck, and you gain a reputation as an asshole to everyone around you. ("This is what they call teenage angst," the therapist tells your mother. "Don't worry about it. He'll do better than Seung-gi.") You study hard, sure, except the motivation now is not to impress your parents, but to be rid of them and the system that you're pretty sure broke your brother. By the time high school rolls around, you gain acceptance to a science school. There, you discover computers.[break][break]
Computers are something you get introduced to by way of class, but you find them endlessly interesting nonetheless. They aren't flawed, like humans; if they're broken, you can fix them. As well you do, because suddenly all the computers at your house are running at 150%. It doesn't take long for you to realize that you can make a career out of it, and suddenly the option presents itself to apply to school in the United States. The process is daunting, and more than a little taxing, filled with doubt about getting in (because if you don't, you've missed the CSATs and you're kind of royally fucked.) Luckily, your shiny acceptance letter comes, and with it your freedom.[break][break]
College is hard. Scrap what anyone told you about going to school back in Korea, because English is difficult. The words swim around on the pages of your textbooks, and where you once were top of your class, you struggle to stay afloat here. The classes where you work with numbers and codes are easier, because much of the terminology is familiar to you. But the rest of your classes are hard enough, and when you're about to take a year to go study back home, of all places, your roommate asks you whether you have to serve in the military, or if they got rid of the law.[break][break]
You spiral downwards from there pretty quickly. The military is no place for you, and the probability that you'll be assigned to a softer unit is slim. Whenever you elect to go, all the walls you've built up will fall down, along with you. And it's not a matter of if, it's a when. [break][break]
(When you're waiting the next summer, degree on hold, eating your final meal before going for conscription, something grabs you and suddenly you're not in Seoul. That's fine.)[break][break]
In the next few minutes, someone finds you and brings you into a room, and you're confused. All your language skills fail you, and when you try to tell them your name, they botch it. Now, to the island, you are Parker Park, computer programmer/engineer/what have you. When you come home from assisting people with computers, you live in a small studio apartment, and try to build a better computer, in an attempt make contact with your government. Wherever you are, you should find a way to alert the authorities that you're alive and well, so as not to worry anyone.[break][break]
It is in this project that you find yourself in a violent fight with a small blond girl for the last processor available on the island. You let loose on her for nigh on an hour, until she concedes defeat and you leave the store, victorious. This happens a lot, because good parts are in short supply and of course you have to fight a girl for them. Penny, as you learn her name is, seems to share the same interest in computers you have, but with completely different reasoning. She's interesting company, your first friend on the island. When you hear talk of her parents kicking her out, you sign a lease with her to share an apartment, with promise of lower rents and less dirty dishes to clean.[break][break]
What you wished you'd known about, back in those good early days, was Percy. How he ended up in your apartment is a mystery, but suddenly the rent was being split three ways. Waking up to a perky ginger every day had not been something planned, but when he decided to eschew his own bed and climb into yours, you get a larger comforter.[break][break]
Now, if only Penny could leave the apartment, Percy might become a little more tolerable.
