The end of the school year is approaching and the students grow desperate to spend their last days together as much as they can before summer rolls around and daily contact is severed. There is not a single child without a pair, trio, quartet, or more, each group of tiny humans playing a different game from the next and some of the most lively bundles of joy leaving one set of friends to bother a set of some others. To any outsider looking it, it would appear that not a single soul has been left out of kindergarten's natural baton race. However, as there always will be, there is at least one unfortunate soul who is left a tad bit out of the loop.[break][break] Sarah spreads her arms out wide and in her mind, she isn't just a little girl with brown braids hanging over her shoulders, but a majestic bird living in a faraway land. A bird that dominates the skies with a larger wingspan than any common finch or black bird could ever hope to attain. A bird with feathers of every color the rainbow up in the sky can offer, and even more shades of red, blue, and yellow than could be found in the colorful illusion. A bird who can fly all day without a care in the world. A bird who knows nothing but kindness and friendship and gives nothing but the same in turn. A bird who does not know the despairs of loneliness and ostracization from her fellow peers. A bird who is most certainly not always alone.[break][break] She lets out one caw. Two caws. Arms – vibrant wings – flap wildly and she takes off over the hard concrete – into the blue, blue skies above – and lets out an oof when a purposely extended leg sends her tumbling back down to the earth. Back down to reality. Her eyes feel with tears at the pain of a scraped knee and bruised palms, but when she looks up, the culprit of this heinous crime is nowhere to be scene. She frowns. Frowns harder when the warm liquid she'd been trying to hold back begins cascading down her face and, before she knows what's really happening, she'd sobbing uncontrollably.[break][break] No one even bothers to spare her a glance.[break][break] It feels like a thousand eternities before the sound of shoe soles against pebble-covered stone resounds in her ear and the shadow of someone much taller than herself casts itself over where her body is slumped over the unforgiving ground. The brown-haired five-year-old lets her gaze go skyward and is surprised to see the face of her older sister, Megan, staring down at her. Sarah has never been good with reading expressions, and the mixture of emotions bubbling within her sister's pretty blue eyes will only prove to confuse her the more she tries to sort them out, so she doesn't even bother. Instead, she doesn't waste a second grabbing the skinny hand offered to her to hoist her up and into the air and throws her arms around her best friend – only friend's – waist. It probably shouldn't make her feel as gregarious as it does when her hug is – albeit hesitantly – returned.[break][break] “Ya' wanna play with me?” the green-eyed kindergartener begs, and she doesn't realize that it's the hopelessness lacing her tone that causes her embarrassed sister to relent.[break][break] “... Sure. What are we playing?”[break][break] “Birds!” she cries happily, waving her arms up in down again and letting out an elated bird call. “I'll be the princess bird and you can be her pretty sister!”[break][break] Megan doesn't say anything at first, and it feels like the entire day has passed before she lets out a half-hearted attempt at imitating the kind of bird her younger sister had casted her as. To her infantile mind, it simply looks like the fifth-grader is simply not very good at it. “No, no, you're really, really bad at that, sissy! Here, let me show ya' how I do it! I'm the best! Ya' gotta do it like this!”[break][break] The recess does not last forever, though Sarah wishes with all her heart it would. Her sister has never played with her at all that year, and having a playmate – even if she was particularly poor at playing the bird princess' beloved sister – made her feel infinitely better, no doubt. When the end chime rings out across the playground and students of all grades let out groans as they slump their way inside, the younger of their pair takes the opportunity to throw the other into a massive bear hug and thanks her for taking the time to indulge her childish playtime. The returned hug is quicker to come this time. Slow, but quicker all the same.[break][break] “It's fine. We're sisters, after all, right? We do everything together.” [PTab= [attr="class","rcfideluxtab"]LOCAL EVENTS ][attr="class","rcfideluxtabz"] [/PTab={background-color:transparent;width:525px;height:460px;padding:0px!important;margin:-23px -3px -3px -3px;}][attr="class","rcfideluxtabz2"]Event Name Here [attr="class","rcfideluxtabz3"]TYPE OF EVENT GOES HERE [attr="class","rcfideluxtabz4"] There is a trample of of footsteps against the crumpling pavement of the elementary school playground as children run to and fro under spring's gentle sun.
