There were only really three places in the entirety of the island that Yugi ever found himself going to: school, his work with Alessandro, and his apartment in the Star Block. Sure, there were plenty of things to see out there. The beaches made for a wonderful view, from what he'd seen of them, and there was supposed to be so many things to do at the Observation Deck and in the Shopping District that it would take months for a person to experience them all back-to-back. And her certainly would have been all for seeing these sights and doing these things... had it not been for the fact that he was still rather lacking in what was affectionately referred to as the “friend department”. It wasn't anything he wasn't use to. Yes, he'd always had Anzu to rely on, but more often than not, in the days leading up to his piecing together of the Millennium Puzzle, she was off doing her own “thing”, spending time with friends who weren't terribly awkward and didn't know what to do about anything that didn't somehow involve a game. He loved her to death, he swore, but even back then, it was easy to think that he was all alone in the world some days. Things had changed for the better with a lightning quick pace once the Puzzle had granted his wish for friends, but now, it was like all of that effort had been for nothing. Alessandro was a better boss than he could have ever hoped for in a place of work not ran by his grandfather, but to call him a “friend” would have been quite the stretch. And school? Well, bullies will be bullies, particularly when a person had a head of hair like his. (Although, thankfully, the bullies here weren't as inclined to knives in their personal forms of vocal and physical aggression as they were back at Domino High. Yeesh.) The end result was a daily pattern that almost never wavered, and even if it did, it never fell off track by any more than ten minutes. Once, he'd been mugged in an alleyway for having an unintentional schedule that he followed so closely – again caused by having nowhere to go but between home, school, and maybe the arcade if he didn't have any better games to play in his room. But that sort of thing wouldn't happen here, right? Crime didn't exist. (He'd never witnessed a man get run over in a car intentionally; his mind couldn't recall, so it never happened at all.)[break][break]
He was walking back from school then, counting his lucky stars that the day he walked home with more homework than most was the day that he had off from work this week. Realistically, the time he'd earn from not having to show up to the tailoring shop would only end up being put toward playing the new Guilty Gear game – er, well, the Tomodachi Island equivalent of, Regretful Machine, anyway – rather than actually working on his assignments, but at least he had time to play anything today! That, and if his teachers expected him to walk away with a “B” average or above, that was their own fault for expecting too much of him. (At this rate, he'd be lucky if he saw a single “C” on his report card. Miserably, he reminded himself only for a second that there would be no mother at him to scold him for it.) So occupied was he on the idea of starting up a brand new game for the very time that he didn't notice the sound of another person walking down the same route behind him. An oddity for this place at this time of day; he took the scenic route because it was the only excuse he had to see something other than streets and the residential areas outside of school, work, and gaming at home. Just because he, himself, did not notice the change, however, didn't mean that someone else didn't. Namely someone more capable of recognizing the situation for what it was. A thought – I wonder which character I'll play - – cut tragically short. (Someone else was in control now.)[break][break]
“There are better ways to say hello,” 'Yugi' began calmly, turning around to meet his pursuer – only to find himself startled by the appearance of the man in question. The signs had accurately told him that he'd been followed (the specifics of exactly how long weren't clear, but it had to have been for at least a few moments of silence), but it hadn't prepared him for the sight presented before him now: an exact replication of his own form, sans the school uniform and baring a skin color much darker than anything a near shut-in of a teenager would ever get to in his life. Sharper eyes, a darker expression. (It looked more like the 'him' now than the host he didn't even realize he was possessing.) A doppelganger? He'd had to deal with one too many of them to be able to trust them now. Whatever this copy-cat was following him for, he didn't care to hear it. Still, his expression didn't betray the jolt of a shock he'd felt at seeing his features on another person's body; he smiled onward, small, impish, arrogant maybe, and teased continued his tease: “Especially to someone who shares the same face. … Who are you?”
