While Atem has definitely come a long way working on his other virtues, I think the one that he's most developed in will always be diligence, because it just comes naturally to him. He's never one to complain about work, and typically always finds something productive to do rather than laze around.

In the pursuit of Yugi, his black shoes clacked against the pavement loudly - Atem wasn't attempting to be stealthy. He knew from memory still fresh in his mind that whatever Yugi saw, he would as well, so to try and wait around would only delay the inevitable. The Pharaoh was already having trouble thinking of the parallel spirit he would no doubt face as himself. He'd never thought he'd have to look his dark past, the times where he had thrown Yugi's wants aside still torn him up at times, and to face the image of himself that thought that it was right...well, it would irk anyone. But he kept his face carefully neutral, even when he was addressed almost instantly, before he could get a word out himself. Just from the tone he knew right away that he wasn't speaking to Yugi. Atem's face hardened, dangerous eyes narrowing further. [break][break]
To wear such a judgmental expression wasn't the best of ideas, as he knew his past well enough to know that it would likely cause some sort of undesirable reaction, however small...but he could barely help it. Especially at the smile that the ghost pulled across Yugi's features. When he had been part of Yugi, it'd felt like a partnership, a true display of their companionship. But watching it unfold through another pair of eyes like this, suddenly he felt it was a sick mockery. It reminded him of a puppet dancing on strings, wooden limbs contorting wildly, drawn face static and unblinking. Atem had many second thoughts, hesitance about getting involved, but overall he knew his first duty, if available to him, was to watch over Yugi, no matter the timeline or universe. Certainly in his past he'd never been transported to this island. There was no telling what kind of effect it would have, so it was better to make sure nothing horrible happened than to simply observe the changes that came with it.[break][break]
"I'm you. Although you in particular are stuck in the past." Atem told him simply, not beating around the bush since it would only make the situation more confusing. The Pharaoh thought about elaborating, to tell his past self that he was not Yugi, but it wasn't like he had any proof (that he would believe) — the way he'd found out his identity was through the assistance of others. He was ill-prepared for this. Luckily, he was naturally skilled in improvising. "I know without a doubt that I can challenge and beat you at one of the...Games, you are so fond of." He spoke the word with some distaste. And then paused for a moment, memory fuzzy. How far in the past was this, exactly? He couldn't be certain he would take the obvious bait. With the arrogance on his features...there was a chance. "Since it stands to reason I would have more experience and skill than a mere ghost of myself..." It didn't matter much if he refused, as this was something of an impulsive move on Atem's part anyhow. It was his pride at work...he was not wishing to be labeled a liar by anyone, especially not his own reflection.

With a heavy sigh, Atem crossed his legs and leaned forward, resting a hand on his chin. His eyes closed, brows knitting together in obvious frustration at Parker's words. It wasn't like the Pharaoh was angry with him for giving it to him straight— no, that wasn't it, he was grateful. He was just primarily angry with himself for being fooled into buying the 'plate' in the first place. At the time, he hadn't had much time to think about it, people had insisted he buy some devices right away to 'keep up' (in spite of his previous experience with cellphones and the like thanks to Yugi), and Atem had given in, without much research into the field. And he wasn't used to spending his own money, even if he had more than enough of it to spend, working for Omega Five. "Thank you. I am not sure..." Atem rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on from the problem. [break][break]
After a brief pause, he simply shook his head. "Just — both. Once the repairs are done, you can show me new computers to purchase. I'll likely have enough savings to pay for it." It wasn't like he was spending it on much else. Even food was only a hobby to him now, not a requirement. He had more leeway than most, as long as he had his rent paid. Once again, he was rushing into things, but something about the man sparked more honesty than the salesman he'd talked to previously, whom he had always gotten a bad feeling about (he'd been too pushy) - yet ignored. In business, people were more likely to lie, even as someone oblivious in these matters such as himself knew that. All he could do right now was keep hoping he would find someone that would offer some true assistance, until he found the time in the day to research himself, perhaps. With any luck, Parker would help and he wouldn't find himself in a 'third time's the charm' route. [break][break]
"Would you mind if I continue to watch you work and asked questions?" Atem asked, only mildly unprompted. "I figure it would be better to get more familiar with the technology so I won't be going in blindly purchasing again any time soon." He picked up his cup of tea that had been sitting on a small table beside him, away from Parker's work just in case of a spill. He'd grown fonder of the drink over time. The Pharaoh took a sip as he waited for a response.

Atem was caught off guard at being so easily read, but realized a second later it was to be expected of a God. Although he wasn't used to such a thing—that is, a God speaking like a modern man and not in ancient tongues—he didn't feel it would be wise to question it. He could at least sympathize with the plight in some way, as Atem himself was only so open about his Pharaoh 'life' because it was the easiest explanation for his actions, not because he wished to garner extra praise or attention. He rather enjoyed a quieter existence, he'd found, when given the chance to. "I understand." The Pharaoh replied ultimately, with an agreeing nod, and he let the subject drop. Their conversation moved, then, onto Yugi. Strange colored eyes opened up large. The old version of him, remaining inside Yugi? Was that even possible? This place had more than one trap card to reveal, it seemed. He tried to control his reaction.[break][break]
"My older self...that will make things difficult." The man finally sighed, deciding not to elaborate further as judging by the owner's comment, he had already found out what a different personality his spirit had been when lost and darkened. And he didn't wish to waste the tailor's time with his own stories, higher being or no, Atem preferred to speak about his personal life in detail only when it was specifically asked of him. The dark-skinned man cooperated silently, while listening intently to the their explanations. The flurry of movement that followed likely would have overwhelmed him on a bad day, but his alert gaze kept up smoothly, examining the jackets and other clothing presented to him. "Alright. Thank you." Atem deliberated for a moment with his options, deciding to not keep the tailor waiting and just pick out what felt right.[break][break]
He changed quickly enough, smoothing out the jacket he wore and looking over himself in the mirror. A small smirk found it's way onto his expression, thinking that the charismatic God hadn't been incorrect, as he agreed that a good suit of this quality would not look wrong on anyone. Luckily he had seen many older men wearing these suits in Domino and recognized the provided tie for what it was, however he would admit if pressed that he struggled for just a few moments with it. It took him a bit to properly envision how to make it fit what he had seen others wearing, but he managed. After he was done, the Pharaoh wasted no time in opening the door, walking out. "How is this?" Atem asked him, on the off chance that he had made poor choices, he wouldn't take offense to being corrected. He wasn't the master of this craft, after all.

A smile bloomed on his face when the door opened to reveal Mami, although his sharp eyes left it a relaxing, keen expression as always. He wasn't one for wide, big grins anymore, in fact they often looked too intimidating on his face. Which was understandable, considering the only thing that would bring such a grin to his face was a type of sadistic pleasure he had found in dealing out justice once upon a time. He nodded at her greeting, responding with a soft "Thank you". With that he made his way into the apartment and looked around. It was a quaint, cozy set up, and it reflected Mami's personality, or what had been revealed to him so far. Atem found it comforting. The Pharaoh took a seat at the table, but remained well-mannered, waiting a few moments for Mami to get settled as well before he began to taste the pastry set out for him. It certainly looked delicious.[break][break]
The skills required to make new connections, new friendships — it didn't come as naturally to him as it might more extroverted folk. It was a talent that had he had to carefully hone overtime, and even then he still struggled when his limits were tested. There had been major improvements in his personality, but he was struck once more with the oddity of not having another to turn to when there was an awkward lull in conversation (although any silence with Mami was pleasant). Truthfully, he had relied on his partner in every aspect, and Yugi had relied on him, too. Of course he had already become accustomed to this empty spot in his soul in the afterlife, but there the adjustment had an ease, because he was back home where Yugi hadn't belonged in the first place.[break][break]
Here, on this island...Yugi might not have belonged, but Atem didn't either. He was at least glad to know that he wasn't the only one feeling this loss. Apparently many beings had been taken here from all types of universes, from what he had heard. Right now, he just had to do the necessary and cope, like anyone else would do in his place. Having others to rely on and be useful to in turn, that would help, he knew. He looked to Mami, still wearing the welcoming smile. "How has your day been so far?" Atem asked, genuinely curious. Not only would he like to know more about her, but more about life on this island. He wondered if it was a puzzle no one would complete, why there were so many gathering in this 'utopia'.

Little did he know he would have someone speaking his partner's name. Atem's eyes went wide, recognition instantly crossing his face as he looked to the source of the sound. He was surprised to see it was a man he didn't know, but only for a moment — surely if Yugi was here, he would be making new connections. That was the way he was, kindness in his heart. The Pharaoh relaxed the posture that had grown tense at the call. Never one to be rude, he allowed the stranger to look him over and welcome him. He was surprised that this human, no, he couldn't be human, could spot with ease that he was not of the living. When he honed in on this creature wearing a older man's skin, he recognized the aura surrounding him for what it was. Looking at him swelled Atem with the same awe that one would feel upon seeing the Egyptian Gods. Was he mistaken, or could it be? Did this utopian island hold everything at once, the dead, the living, and the Godly? He had seen a lot of impossible things in his times, but this took a good leading spot among them. "I am Atem. I am a Pharaoh—in my time, long ago."[break][break]
There was no reason to hide anything from a God, as he assumed if they wanted information, they would have it. Even as a spirit who no longer feared death, Atem would rather not tempt fate and find out if a powerful being could still cause him pain although he was now sans a vessel. But, speaking of... "I do know Yugi. He is my..." A pause in his otherwise direct speech, as he considered how to word it in an easily graspable way. "My successor, I would say. He guided my spirit for a while when it was restless." Deeming that enough exposition, the Pharaoh showed no fear in the face of what could be a Lord over all, but he did show an utmost respect.

Any being that could hold such a grand title deserved it, of course. Especially if they were older than he himself was, their wisdom would be beyond compare. "If he is present, then I will have to find him. I would like to be in contact with him again. However...as I did not know he was on this island, that is not why I came to this shop." A smile bloomed on his face. "I was hoping you would not mind making some choices for me. Since I am unfamiliar with the formal wear of this time..." Casual wear, that he could work with, but you didn't get much knowledge about other fashion staples when you were friends with the youth of an era.

Appearances were important to him. He was reluctant to describe himself as snobby or judgemental, although he would admit that in the past he had looked down on those that cared little about remaining well-kept. But he had been able to befriend and empathize with those types nonetheless, despite the differences he had with them. A Pharaoh had to be diplomatic. ...Well, what a funny way he was thinking now. He would scoff at it, remembering all the days he had spent without knowing his past, feeling little to no connection to it. Times had changed. As soon as he had spent time in the afterlife Atem had known it was his true calling. It was not the power (there was little need for his rule with how perfect a heaven could be) but providing a service his people, upholding the history and mighty tradition they had built, that was an honor that he found joy in. He had to wonder if the owner of this island felt the same, but he then pushed away the thought as he reached his destination.[break][break]
Bonasera...a tailor shop, primarily making suits, which Atem had found out was the most 'formal' clothing you could wear in the modern world. This was why he was here. He knew the price tags could be steep, so the Pharaoh had taken care to save up for this purchase, just in case. If the tailor was a master in their craft, they likely would have a pride in it, and as such charge appropriately. With any luck, they would be willing to help Atem in spite of his ignorance. There was one relief about living here. The nature of the island meant that he could explain his backstory without getting disbelieving looks like he would have in Domino. Which meant he had an usable reason for why he had no idea what kind of suit to purchase. Atem was not a fan of using excuses, and normally his confidence would not allow it, but here, the task at hand was minor enough that he didn't feel much reluctance. Pushing open the door and taking in the scent and lighting of the shop, assessing it's quality, a piercing gaze scanned for any workers. Stepping forward, he called out. "Hello?" Atem placed a hand on his hip, waiting for a response before continuing onward. The sign had said it was open, but...

The Pharaoh had let his eyes slip closed as the elevator went up, the soft whirring of the contraption already relaxing him somewhat. When it reached it's destination and rang once more, causing his eyes to flutter open, the first thing he saw was the blue sky. Then, someone looking to him and addressing him. Blonde, blue eyes. A weird accent. Down to the way he carried himself, apart from the different eye color, the stranger overall reminded him of someone else he knew. Because of this, Atem gave the human-appearing person a small smirk, stepping out of the elevator and unfolding his arms. It closed behind him. The question didn't bother him, even if technically it was a little out of place to ask, maybe even rude to some. "Maybe so." He answered, seemingly cryptic in nature, before he elaborated on the truth. "I believe any newcomer to this island would find it easy to refer to themselves 'lost', physically or not."[break][break]
Truthfully he was not sure the youthful man would find any interest in further conversation, so Atem turned his gaze away for the time being, taking a few steps closer to the rails. You truly could see the whole island from here, no doubt about that. Of course, unless you had the eyes of an eagle, it was difficult to pick out anything beyond the most major of landmarks. What Atem noticed first was an amusement park in the distance, easy to spot thanks to it's gigantic ferris wheel.[break][break]
A twinkle in his eye, he thought it a good idea to visit when he found the time. Atem wasn't the type to be overly enthusiastic about such things, far from ever being described loud and boisterous (in spite of this his voice naturally carried some 'boom', from the repeated practice of calling attacks in duels). Still even he could admit there was some entertainment to be had in the smallest of pleasures...such as ring toss. It was no Duel Monsters, however he and Yugi wouldn't be the King of Games if they had discriminated.

He hadn't been expecting to make a friend so quickly. Atem had little to no idea of how this land would compare to Domino or Egypt, but because of the introduction to it, maybe he had been a bit too skeptical. The Pharaoh had expected the shadier types, something darker lurking underneath. Everyone had something they wanted to hide. But sure enough, a girl named Mami in his apartment block had extended a friendly hand towards him upon his confession that he was new to the area. A tentative smile had found it's way onto his face as he accepted her invitation to tea, and so that was that. He hadn't thought to get dressed up too much, as he did not own many outfits as of yet, though he had been collecting whatever suitable clothes he could find. It was best to fit in with the general crowd. At times, he nearly found himself buying anything similar to the ridiculous things Yugi used to wear, black chokers and all. [break][break]
Over time, he'd grown used to Yugi's sense of 'fashion' and even embraced it - since it wasn't like he could magically outfit swap upon taking over the vessel (how silly would that be?). And when it came to himself, his tastes for clothing were now varied and adaptable due to these experiences. Anything from long elegant dresses and robes to a simple tee and jeans could suit him. He did have a fondness for accessories, and as of right now he was fitted with small stud earrings. They were tiny silver things, nothing like the extravagant jewelry he was used to as a Pharaoh, but they sparkled in the light and he could appreciate the subtlety of it. Atem wore something similar to the youth he talked with in Domino yet fitting to his normal color scheme, simple beiges and whites instead of the usual greens and blues his past friends would wear. It was a jacket over a graphic tee and jeans. [break][break]
Searching his memory and checking his watch to make sure he had the right room and time (right on the dot it was, as he was either punctual or fashionably late depending on the conditions and situation of the meeting), Atem rose a bronze hand and rapped on the door. Finding the sound satisfactory, he let his arms fall to his sides, waiting patiently for Mami to appear. When was the last time he had 'tea and cake', if at all? He recognized the names and had a mental picture for them, but as good as his memory was, there were many times he had zoned out in Yugi's life to give him some privacy. He did not know the ins and outs of every meal his partner had, and unfortunately that was his main reference point for modern food. The cuisine in Egypt had been leagues different. A sense of unease seeped into Atem's soul. This strange island he had been transported to was quaint, nice, cozy—every good synonym under the sun you could fit to it. But that was the problem. These people, the Council, it was not hard to see that they meant well, but in dealings of justice there was always a price. A balancing act. There would be mistakes, there had to be. A utopia, outside of the afterlife, was impossible. The longer he stayed here, the more he realized that he was not transported to another kind of afterlife, but another dimension. Thus, this common sense of a rule applied. He was now part of the Omega Five, tasked with upholding this perfection.[break][break]
An invitation was extended to him when he told them of his experience with Shadow Games (he'd had no reason to lie or hide, at the time). Perhaps they were worried, and seeked to give him a loyalty for these powers, a properly controlled one. The Pharaoh had no reason to argue...for now. The council weren't demanding he use his abilities in his occupation as interrogator, but considering the description that title came with...[break][break]
It must be expected. Atem was torn on whether the acceptance of this status was right. When he'd left Yugi behind, his partner had told him he would miss him. Touched, he had said they would never truly be apart, for the impact they had made on each other's lives was great. This had not been a lie, but little did he know that he would be in a situation where he found himself wishing for his old partner's advice and not the other way around. Without Yugi to be his moral center in the modern living world, his surroundings became a blur of muddled grey, not the defined black and white system he was used to seeing it as. Odd, as he would consider himself a decisive person on his own. But there was too much about this world unknown, and he did not wish to fall into the same trap he had once before.[break][break]
Suddenly, he was ripped away from his deep thoughts and snapped back to reality. The cause of this? The loud ring of an elevator bell, and the doors opening for him, revealing the bright lights of the empty box inside. Sighing, Atem stepped inside and turned, hitting the button for the roof. His regal upbringing kept him from casting his gaze downwards, and instead he folded his arms as he waited. Observing the island from the aptly named tower might give him some minor insight for the questions swirling. If he could just get a feel for the land he was on, get just a tiny bit more comfortable with it...it was only one step in the journey, but an important one.

KING OF GAMES
A firm believer the Heart of the Cards, Atem is a natural master at nearly any game of his choosing. There have only been a handful of times in his lifetime (and afterlife) that he has lost a game. This, compared to a countless amount of victories. One of his losses was with what he believes to be his successor in every way, Yugi Mutou. Learning how to quit when the consequences of winning were too great and how exactly to accept defeat remained a major part of Atem's journey with Yugi, but even after having learned this, he does not go down without a fight. Atem will accept any challenge given to him. Even though Yugi has taught him kindness, Atem still struggles with his pride from time to time as it is both his greatest strength and his greatest weakness.
GAMES OF DARKNESS
As Pharaoh and as a former part of the Millennium Puzzle (as well as its current wielder - or one of them, anyway), Atem has the ability to play a Shadow Game with an opponent of his choosing that accepts the challenge. No matter the rules of the game, it is unlike any other. Through sorcery, a Shadow Game can not be interrupted and cheating is strictly forbidden, punishable by death. The winner of a Shadow Game can inflict a Penalty Game punishment upon the loser (or cheater). He is capable of giving supernatural punishments. This punishment typically involves an a gruesome illusion being cast on the loser's soul. However, Atem has long since stopped his use of Penalty Games.

A spirit's history, overspanning thousands of years. From ruling over Egypt in his original lifetime to being a steady part of his successor's life in the modern world, then to the afterlife and back again for the slightest of moments (though that one moment would change everything)...Atem is no stranger to unfamiliar lands or mystical events. In his existence he has made several mistakes. He would not say he has seen everything life has to offer—surely with the endless possibilities of life there is always something new around the corner, even if you are immortal. Certainly with the way he is aged mentally well beyond the years he truly lived, he has seen enough. Truth be told, a battle rages on in his beating soul even now. There is an exhaustion there, that would want nothing more than to stay in the afterlife and sleep, sleep for as long as he could (which would be forever, as you can achieve anything you want in your personal heaven). But the stronger part, his pride, refused it. He would like to keep watch over all of his friends and all of their lineage as it continues. And as long as he is able, he would do anything to protect them.[break][break]

He promised Yugi. He did not have to, but he did, and he intends to keep his word. He told him they would never truly be apart, and the one way to make that a reality was to watch his movements, to listen for when Yugi would call to him. Yes, perhaps it was prideful of him to interfere with the world of the living. To return to the puzzle. His pride would be his downfall once more, doomed to walk between all dimensions, forever a dark guardian. A shadow, for as long as the Earth spins. Is it a penalty for that which he inflicted on so many others? When he opens his eyes and sees the sand, he's relieved. It fades into nothingness as he realizes this is not the sands of his home, his desert, but of a coast unrecognized. A frown would cross his face, gripping the chains of the puzzle harsher. Let it leave an indent in his bronze skin. There is silence, nothing but the waves beyond him crashing. He closes his eyes. Takes a deep breath. When he opens them, people in the distance are looking at him. A stranger, unsurprised by his appearance, calling him over. [break][break]
You have but one more task to complete.
And Atem knows they are alive. From their bored expression, currently devoid of gratitude for the time they had been given, the lazy wave, their clothing, more akin to what Yugi's friends would wear. If he was a lesser being, he might feel resentment for the way they carry themselves, maybe he would choose to let darkness consume him once more, the way he was when he took it upon himself to protect Yugi no matter the cost. No matter what Yugi thought of his methods. Those days were long past, and he would let them pass. Like the sand of the beaches retreating into the blue sea he knows is behind him, his memories leave him, and he must focus on the present. Atem must learn what he can from this, his posture straightening and putting his hand up in acknowledgement, to let this person know he is listening, listening to the living as well as the dead, as he always has. Such is the way of a Pharaoh.[break][break]
Atem must learn to let it go once more.
